Padraig Harrington grabbed a slim one-stroke lead over Angel Cabrera after roller coaster start to the 36-hole PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

The Open champion fired six birdies and three bogeys in a three under par 67 at the spectacular Mid-Ocean Club as US Open champion Cabrera birdied the par five 18th for a 68.

Former US Open winner Jim Furyk, who stepped in to replace PGA champion Tiger Woods, and Masters winner Zach Johnson both shot one over par 71s in the race for the €450,000 top prize.

The €950,000 event is a two-round strokeplay shoot out between the winners of the season's four majors with Harrington bidding to become just the second European winner since Ian Woosnam in 1991.

Harrington bogeyed the third but then birdied the fifth, sixth, eighth to lead by two from Cabrera and Furyk and by four from Johnson at the turn.

The Dubliner picked up further shots at the 11th and 12th to lead by three shots from Cabrera on four under par.

But bogeyed the 238-yard 13th and long par four 15th before grabbing a birdie at the 16th.
