Royal County Down's Danielle McVeigh took the individual gold in World University Games in Bangkok.

But Ireland were forced to settle for silver in the Women's Team event after being pipped by Mexico by a stroke.

Leading by seven strokes with a round to play, McVeigh closed with a four over par 76 at Watermill Golf and Gardens to win the gold by four shots from Mexico's Diana Cantu on four over par.

Claremorris's Niamh Kitching, playing out of the University of Limerick, hit a 79 to take 18th place as UCC's Gillian O'Leary closed with a 80 for 32nd place.

But there was disappointment for the Irish trio in the team event as they were forced to settle for silver.

With two scores to count each day, Ireland looked odds on to take the team gold as they moved eight shots clear of Great Britain with a round to play.

In the end it was the Mexicans who stormed through to snatch the glory - coming from nine shots behind Ireland thanks to Cantu's 71 and a 74 by Lilian Alvarez.

Great Britain were forced to settle for fifth place, eight shots behind with winners, with the United States taking the bronze.
