Ireland 22nd as Scotland take first Eisenhower

Ireland finished a disappointing 22nd as Scotland romped to a shock nine-stroke win at the World Amateur Team Championship.

The trio of Jonny Caldwell, Paul Cutler and Shane Lowry were hoping to complete an amazing treble in Adelaide after wins this season in the Home Internationals and the European Team Championships.

But instead it was the Scots Wallace Booth, Callum Macaulay and Gavin Dear who pulled off a unique double by lifting the Eisenhower Trophy for the first time - less than a year after Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren won Scotland's first World Cup.

Gale force conditions blew away Ireland's hopes as Caldwell (76), Lowry (79) and Cutler (80) struggled to cope with the wind and finished nine over par for the final round and 11-over in total.

Irish skipper Mick Burns said: “It was not our day. The team obviously under-performed and are bitterly disappointed, but they will have learned from this experience and will bounce back.”

The weather was no problem to the Scots, who took a four stroke lead over the United States into the final round at Royal Adelaide and extended it to nine.

Macaulay, who shot a one-under-par 72, said: "We set out to try to win but to go out and do it is unbelievable."

Thanks to Dear's two-over 75, Scotland finished with a 20-under-par total of 560 for 72 holes with the USA second on 569 and Sweden third on 574.
