Bookies count the cost of Harrington win
Bookies Ladbrokes were left licking their wounds after Padraig Harrington landed his second Claret Jug in a row on Sunday.
The firm reckons Harrington’s victory at Royal Birkdale cost them in the region of a cool ONE MILLION EURO after the dust had settled on Monday morning.
Ladbrokes Ireland spokesman Donal McCarthy said; "With all the talk of Harrington's injury scare you would have thought punters would have held fire but that wasn't the case in Ireland and our industry top price of 20-1 proved extremely popular in our shops".
Padraig Harrington is now 16 – 1 with Ladbrokes to make it three-in-a-row at the 2009 British Open and 14-1 to win the USPGA title at Oakland Hills in August.
Last year, Harrington's maiden Open win at Carnoustie cost Paddy Power around €5 million as punters piled on at 25 and 30-1
