Laydens win World Invitational Father & Daughter

Inaugural World Invitational Father & Daughter Golf Tournament, Doonbeg Golf Club, Co. Clare, Ireland.
 
Americans James and Kathleen Layden playing out of Bel Air Golf Club in Los Angeles closed with a final day score of 44 points for a total of 87 points to win the Inaugural World Invitational Father & Daughter Golf Tournament at Doonbeg Golf Club
 
The Laydens beat Thomas and Casey Gahan from Deepdale Golf Club in New York who shot 45 points on the last day for a total of 86 points.
 
Kevin and Meghan Grehan from Westchester Country Club who held a commanding lead after the first round came 3rd with 85 points. Meghan plays off +1 handicap and is a past New York State amateur champion.
 
Deepdale members Jeffrey & Katherine Kelter were the fourth placed team on 83 points. In fifth place with 80 points were American Footballer Stephen Thurlow, who played for the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, and his daughter Katie Johnson.
 
The leading Irish team consisting of Doonbeg member Kieran Walshe and his daughter Orla came in 9th with a score of 73 points followed by Portmarnock Golf Clubs Tom O'Reilly and his international golfing daughter Zarah in 10th with 71 points.
 
During the Gala Dinner at the Lodge at Doonbeg Bel Air and Sand Hills member James Layden said "To come here from Los Angeles with my daughter Katie was an unforgettable experience. To win the Inaugural Event was the icing on the cake. I have two other daughters and when we called them in Los Angeles to tell them of our win, the debate of who will play next year had already started".
 
General Manager of Doonbeg Joe Russell also spoke at the Gala Dinner "We are delighted to host this Inaugural event and look forward to growing it in the years ahead. The World Invitational Father & Daughter Golf Tournament is a fantastic format and I think the ladies really enjoyed Doonbeg. We look forward to supporting this event in the years ahead”.
 
The event will be held in Doonbeg at the end of July 2009 and the field will be limited to 50 teams.
