Lisa Maguire wins Spanish Amateur

Slieve Russell’s Lisa Maguire beat France’s Emilie Alonso one up to claim the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez.

Just a few weeks after her sister twin Leona took the Portuguese Amateur title to rise as high as fifth in the new World Amateur Ranking for women, she was all square after nine, edged ahead at the 16th and then closed out the match at the last.

Set to move into the top 20 in the world rankings tomorrow, Lisa beat top German international Antonia Scherer 5 and 3 in Saturday’s semi-finals having despatched England’s Holly Clyburn at the 21st in the quarter-finals having been three down through eleven.

Maguire beat fellow international Danielle McVeigh at the 21st in the first round before seeing off Spanish starlet Luna Sobron Galmes in the afternoon.

Her win over Alonso made amends for he sister Leona’s defeat to the French player in the quarter-finals.
