Portmarnock win Senior Cup; Claremorris take Jimmy Bruen

On the final day of the Chartis Cups and Shields finals at Castlerock Golf Club, it was Portmarnock and Claremorris that triumphed in the Senior Cup and Jimmy Bruen Shield respectively, writes the Golfing Union of Ireland.

Portmarnock claimed their first Senior Cup title since Lisburn in 2003, closing out the top three matches against Warrenpointen route to a convincing 4-1 win.

James Fox beat Warrenpoint’s Paul Reavey of Warrenpoint on the 18th, winning by a 2 hole margin, while Geoff Lenehan won the second match against David Barron by 2 and 1.

It was Irish International John Greene who sealed the win for Portmarnock, closing out Colm Campbell Jnr by 3 and 2.

The meeting of Claremorris and Forrest Little in the final of the Jimmy Bruen Shield, presented each club with a chance to earn their first ever green pennants and it was the Mayo outfit that triumphed with the final outcome coming down to the last match left on course in true Cups and Shields fashion.

Having lost the top match, Claremorris rallied and when David Burke and Shane McGagh put their first point on the board, it was left to the pairings of Damien Burke/Des Griffith and Ger Noone/Martin Higgins to add the winning points which they did in style, recording wins by 3 and 2 and 2 and 1 respectively.

All eyes will be on next year’s finals and the path to Kinsale will be littered with many moments of agony and joy.
