The Ballyliffin professional had six birdies on his card at GC Erzherzog Johann just outside Maria Lankowitz to share top spot with event sponsor and home hero Martin Wiegele (68) on 10 under par.

The cut fell at one under par, which meant an early exit for Banbridge’s Richard Kilpatrick and Birr’s Stephen Grant.

Kilpatrick added a 74 to his opening 73 to miss out by four shots while former professional footballer Grant followed a 76 with a 74 to finish well off the pace on six over.

Mike Kelly finished on 10 over after adding an 83 to his opening 70.

McCarroll and Wiegele are three shots clear of Spain’s Jesus Legarrea (72) with Welsman Rhys Enoch alone in fourth on six under
