Awesome Dawson survives Close call
Faithlegg’s Robin Dawson recovered from a 72nd hole nightmare reminiscent of Padraig Harrington’s at Carnoustie to win the Irish Boys Amateur Open Championship after a dramatic three-hole playoff with England’s Marco Penge at Lisburn.
Dawson had a two-shot lead playing the par-three 18th, but took three putts from 10 feet for a double bogey.
However, he regained his composure quickly, holing from 15 feet on the 16th - the first playoff hole - for a birdie three.
Penge made par and after both parred the 17th, Dawson’s supporters must have thought he was home and dry after a beautiful three-iron to 10 feet at the 18th - the scene of his original nightmare.
Hoever, Penge hit his tee shot to 25 feet and followed it wiuth a hit an immaculate putt that looked in all the way but cruelly lipped out, leaving the Faithlegg man two putts for the win, which he duly took.
