Walton slips, Monty wins
Philip Walton let a decent cheque slip away for the second week running when he closed with a 77 in the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn.
Catching Colin Montgomerie, who won his maiden European Senior Tour title by six shots and his first since the European Open at The K Club six years ago, was an almost impossible task for the Malahide native.
But a five over par closing round, featuring three birdies, three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey left the Dubliner tied 21st and just €4,068 richer.
Montgomerie closed with a clinical, two-under par 70 on the Duke’s Course to finish on 10 under par 206, pocketing a cheque for €52,299 and his first senior title in just his third start on the European Senior Tour since turning 50 in June.
The Scot’s brilliance relegated Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin to a distant runner-up alongside England’s Paul Wesselingh, who surged up the leaderboard with a best-of-the-week 66, on four under par.
Englishman Carl Mason, who was bidding for a third Senior Masters title this week, signed for a two over par 74 to finish in a tie for fourth alongside Scotland’s Ross Drummond.
“It feels great,” said an elated Montgomerie. “Anybody with any competitive blood in them knows that it is nice to win, to come out on top.
“This course has suited me down to the ground for years. I had a couple of great finishes on the main Tour – the Junior Tour, as I now call it – so it’s nice to come back here and finally win.”
Defending champion Des Smyth closed with a 71 to take 42nd on eight over and just €1,534 while Cork’s Denis O’Sullivan, who was joint 54th on 12 over after a 78, won prize money of €750.
