Glasson celebrates 20th anniversary in style
There was a double celebration at Glasson recently, when the wonderful Co Westmeath course celebrated 20 years in operation and the annual President’s Prize with a three-way playoff.
Many found it hard to believe that it had been 20 years since Christy O’Connor Jnr and Peter McEvoy officially opened Glasson in glorious sunshine on the 31 August 1993.
There was little sunshine on 1 September this year but the day stayed dry and the wind provided an extra test for the more than 100 entrants from Tom Reid’s President’s Prize, many of whom have been members since that magical first day.
Those who play it often will tell you that the course has matured beautifully and the Christy Jnr’s and Tom Reid’s vision has become a reality: a great test of golf combined with breathtaking scenery given that there are views of beautiful Lough Ree from every hole.
There was a great atmosphere and tough competition on the day as 21 golfers qualified for a 9-hole play off, which ended in a three way tie between Tommy McArdle (12), Patricia McGivney (16 ) and Anthony Fox (12). who all had 57 points.
There was a count back based on the play off to decide the eventual winner - Anthony Fox. Congratulations all round.
