Can Eddie Power make it six in 50th Kilkenny Scratch Cup?

Joe Carr won the Kilkenny Scratch Cup in 1965

Eddie Power will be going for a record sixth win in the 50th anniversary staging of the Kilkenny Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday, June 21.

But the thre-time Irish Close winner, very much a part-time player these days, faces some stiff opposition from the likes of Royal Dublin's Jeff Hopkins, the Portmarnock quartet of John Greene, Geoff Lenehan, Stephen Walsh and James Fox, Dungarvan's Alan Thomas, Stackstown's Richard Bridges, Mark Shanahan from Castlemartyr, Carton House's Shane McGlynn, Claremorris' Stephen Healy and Lucan's Richard O'Donovan.

The 63-strong field, which will be finalised on May 31, will be playing for a €1,850 prize fund with a voucher for €700 going to the winner.

But there will also be the glory of getting your name on a famous old trophy alonside the likes of Joe Carr, Pádraig Harrington (and his caddie Ronan Flood), Damien McGrane, Liam Higgins, Liam MacNamara, Pat Mulcare, Mark Gannon, John O'Leary and Rory McIlroy's current tour manager Sean O'Flaherty.

Kilkenny's captain Denis Brophy said: "Quite an amount of planning and preparatory work has gone into the upgrading of the event in this special year to make it very much a special occasion for all the participants."

Kilkenny will be looking to Power, holder Paul O'Hara and recent winners Michael Buggy and Ricard Walsh to keep the trophy at home.
