Late dramatics as Fitzsimons captures Munster Boys after playoff

Matthew Fitzsimons captured the Munster Boys after a three-hole playoff at

Ardglass' Matthew Fitzsimons birdied the last and then captured the Munster Boys Amateur Open in dramatic fashion when he beat Belvoir Park's Marc Norton and Tralee's Rory Hill in a six-hole playoff at Ballybunion.

n a nice twist, he also followed in the footsteps of his father Ciaran, who beat John McHenry in the 1981 final at the same venue when it was a matchplay event.

The trio tied on eight over par 296 with Norton firing a 72, Fitzsimons a 74 and Hill a 75 at the famous Co Kerry links.

Hole by hole scoring

Fitzsimons looked to have blown his chances with a triple bogey seven at the 14th but his closing birdie proved crucial as Hill dropped five shots in his last four holes with a 7-3-7-5 finish.

Norton was eliminated after a three-hole aggregate play-off before Fitzsimons went on to beat Hill at the third extra hole in sudden-death.
