PGA Tour — Padraig Harrington's hopes of securing the Top-2 finish he needs to make the FedEx Cup playoffs were dealt a massive blow in the first round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro.

The Dubliner, 43 later this month, missed three putts inside five feet as he opened with a two over 72 to share 118th spot.

He's nine shots behind Camilo Villegas, who shot a seven under 63 to lead by one from William McGirt and Webb Simpson in the final event of the regular PGA Tour season.

Ranked 188th in the FedEx Cup standings, Harrington could lose his full PGA Tour privileges and be forced to rely on invitations or his one-off career earnings exemption next year if he fails to keep his card.

Meanwhile, Francesco Molinari (69) and Stephen Gallacher (71) have work to do if they are to bump the resting Graeme McDowell out of the automatic places in the European Ryder Cup team.

PGA Europro Tour — North West's Mick McGeady is just one stroke off the lead with a round to play in the Break90 Classic at Slaley Hall in Northumberland. Scores

he shot a three under 69 to sit alone in second spot on nine under par as England's Jack Colgate shot 63 to lead on 10 under.

Jonny Caldwell (66) is tied sixth on six under with Colm Moriarty (67) tied 15th on on five under and Tim Rice (69) tied 34th on two under.

Paul Cutler,  Mark Murphy,  David Rawluk,  Matt McAlpin and  Cian Curley missed the cut.

British Boys Amateur Open — Hermitage's Rowan Lester is through to the last 32 of the Boys Amateur Championship at Prestwick & Dundonald Links. He beat Adrian Villiger of Switzerland 5 and 3 and now takes on Denmark's Fredrik Hedmark in the third round at 9.14am. Matchplay draw

LPGA — Royal Portrush's Stephanie Meadow is nine shots off the lead after the first round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship in New York.

Playing thanks to a sponsor's invitation, the former University of Alabama star suffered her second big reverse since she turned professional when she carded a three over par 75 at Monroe Golf Club in Pitsford.

Meadow is tied for 105th place behind Lex Thompson and South Korea's Meena Lee, who shot a six under 66s to lead by one from Brittany Lincicome, Colombia's Lisa McCloskey and Canada's Jennifer Kirby.

Starting on the back nine, Meadow bogeyed the 10th and parred her way to the turn before dropping further shots at the second, fifth and seventh against a solitary birdie four at the third in a 34-putt round.

Third on her professional debut in the US Women's Open, the 22-year old missed the cut in the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale.
