Kearney survives Jakarta winds, McGrane and Hoey cut in Shanghai
Asian Tour — Niall Kearney survived a day of high winds to make the cut with ease in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by Enjoy Jakarta Golf.
The Dubliner added a four over 76 to his opening 73 to share 40th spot on five over par at Royal Jakarta Golf Club, albeit nine strokes behind Singapore-based Australian Unho Park. Scores
As Kearney followed a level par front nine with a homeward run of 40, Park battled the gusty conditions before signing for a one over 73 that gave him a one-stroke advantage over first round leader Chan Shih-chang of Chinese Taipei.
Chan eagled his closing ninth hole to haul himself back into contention, taking the outright second place with a 75 after struggling for most of the day.
Thailand’s Namchok Tantipokhakul and Chapchai Nirat signed for matching 142 total to share third place with Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and Japan’s Yosuke Tsukada while Lee Westwood returned with a 74 on his 42nd birthday to stay in touch with the leaders in seventh place on one under.
“It was a tough day in the office today,” said 41-year old Park. "I actually felt the winds were blowing harder today. I didn’t hit it as good as yesterday but I still managed to hit some decent shots.
“I always surprise myself when I play well. Today, I just hung in there as it was really a grind today. But overall, it’s still a good position heading into the weekend.”
Westwood was also happy, despite his 74.
“I feel like under-par will still get you into contention and I’m still in there,” Westwood said. "I think it’s going to be bunched up and a scramble on the Sunday. So it’s just the case of being within a few shots of the leaders.”
European Tour — Damien McGrane and Michael Hoey missed the cut as Julien Quesne continued his rich vein of form to establish a one-shot lead over his fellow Frenchman Alex Levy and American Peter Uihlein heading into the weekend at the Volvo China Open.
Quesne, who finished in a tie for fourth in the Shenzhen International last Sunday, carded a five under par 67 at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club in Shanghai to lead by on eight under.
Home heroes Li Hao-tong and Wu Ashun are in a six-strong group on five under par which includes Italian Matteo Manassero. last week’s winner, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Romain Wattel of France.
McGrane had 33 putts as he shot a three over 75 to miss the two over par cut — which equalled the highest of the season — by a stroke.
Level par after six holes having started on the back nine, he double bogeyed the 16th and bogeyed the 17th and 18th to turn in 40 but couldn't recover on the back nine despite two birdies and just one more dropped shot.
Hoey had a tough week from tee to green and also shot 75 to miss the cut by five strokes.
