Carey opens with 69 in Alps Tour Grand Final

David Carey during practice

David Carey made five birdies in a two under 69 to lie six shots behind runaway Order of Merit winner Matt Wallace in the Alps Tour Grand Final presented by AXA.

The Dubliner, 20, is tied 17th at Miglianico Golf & Country Club  in Abruzzo and it will be tough to catch leader Wallace. who is leading the Alps Tour and guaranteed  to win the Order of Merit.

Seeking his sixth win of the season, Wallace shot an eight under 63 to equal the course record and he has no plans to start playing safe now.

“I’m a great fan of the soccer team Manchester United and Alex Ferguson who was the coach for a quarter-century knowing only one way to play: to attack. I agree with him and I don’t know another way to play golf."

France’s Fabien Marty is a shot behind after a 64 as he seeks a p[ace in the Top five in the rankings and promotion to the Challenge Tour.

Marty is 12th nearly €9,000 behind the player in fifth while Carey is 36th.
