PGA Tour — Padraig Harrington shot a one under par 71 but fell seven shots behind leader Brendan Steele in the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

The Dubliner, 44, birdied the third from 12 feet and followed a bogey at the sixth with another birdie at the 12th, where he had a two-foot tap in after almost holing his approach from 155 yards.

While he dropped another shot when he missed the par-three 16th green, Harrington birdied the 17th with a pitch to five feet and goes into round three tied for 19th on three under.

He's seven shots behind Steele, who shot a 70 to lead by three shots on 10 under from Scott Langley (68), Charley Hoffman (71) and Stuart Appleby (70), who began his round at the 10th with a triple bogey seven following with a four-putt from seven feet. 

McNamara overtaken on moving day

Challenge Tour — Rory McNamara learned that the Challenge Tour is a one-way street with no speed limit when he was overrun  on moving day in the Red Sea Egyptian Challenge Presented by Hassan Allam Properties.

The Headfort player was tied seventh at halfway but despite making four birdies, he signed for a level par 72 and ended the day tied for 30th on eight under and seven behind overnight leader Jordan Smith.

The Englishman battled windy conditions for a two under par 70 and a two-shot lead over Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach, who played himself into contention with a 68 at Sokhna Golf Club.

“It was a battle out there today,” Smith said. “The wind picked up which made it very difficult. I got off to a good start and I just missed a lot of short putts, so it could have been really good but I am really pleased to keep that steady score going.”

Six players reached 12 under to share third place, including British Amateur champion Romain Langasque (65). who turned professional after the Masters.

Fresh from his hole-in-one on Thursday, England’s William Harrold shot the best round of the day with an eight under par 64 to also reach 12 under par.

Hopkins makes Zambia cut

Sunshine Tour — Royal Dublin’s Jeff Hopkins shots a second successive, level par 73 to make the cut in the Zambia Sugar Open 2016.

The former Barton Shield winner made the weekend with a shot to spare as he mixed four birdies with four bogeys at Lusaka Golf Club.

Cyprus’ Andrew Georgiou added a 66 to his opening 69 to lead on 11 under par 135, two shots clear of CJ du Plessis of South Africa (67).
