Jack Hume slipped eight shots off the pace as Warrenpoint's Colm Campbell Jnr added a two over 72 to his opening 73 to lead the Irish challenge for the Lytham Trophy at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

The international ended the day tied for eighth, five strokes behind a trio of leaders in James Walker (66), Bradley Moore (68) and Alfie Plant (73) on five over par 145.

A double bogey six at the 17th took some of the gloss off an excellent round for the former East of Ireland champion. But he's in with an excellent chance, despite the fact that the leaders are two clear of Nairn's Sandy Scott and four ahead of Christopher Maclean (69), Frenchman Ugo Coussaud (70) and Scotland's former Irish Amateur Open winner Jamie Savage (71).

The ever-improving Dundalk man Caolan Rafferty shot 73 to share 12th spot on six over 146 with West of Ireland champion Jonathan Yates (74)  as nine of the 20-strong irish contingent mad the cut for the top 40 and ties on nine over 149.

Yates' Naas clubman came home in five over 41 for a 76 that left him on eight over alongside Tullamore's Stuart Grehan, who had an excellent 71, and Ardee's Eugene Smith, who had three birdie twos in his 72.

Whitehead's John-Ross Galbraith (73),  Portmarnock's Geoff Lenehan (74) and Tramore's Robin Dawson (76) made the cut on the limit with Co Sligo's Sean Flanagan missing out by one after a bogey at the 18th.
