McCarroll powers to victory at Carton House

Brendan McCarroll

Brendan McCarroll fired a best of the day seven under par round of 66 to win the Johnston Mooney & O’Brien PGA Challenge at Carton House on Wednesday.

The Narin & Portnoo GC professional finished four shots clear of Colm Moriarty (Drive Golf Performance) with David Higgins (Waterville Golf Links), Mark Staunton (Delgany GC) and Damien Mooney (Nevada Bob’s Belfast) sharing third on five under.

“I just rolled in a few more putts today," said the 30-year-old.

"I could say I hit the ball a bit better, but really it was the putting. I missed a few yesterday that I rolled in today.”

McCarroll started the day one shot behind overnight leader Noel Fox (GUI Academy) but made quick inroads with a blistering start that saw him record five birdies in the opening six holes.

He reached the turn in five under 32 and started for home with another birdie at the 10th. He played the back nine in two under 34 adding further birdies at the 13th and 17th recording his only dropped shot of the tournament at the par three 14th.

After the best part of 10 years battling to make a living as a touring professional, McCarroll believes his performances have improved since opting to go down the PGA route.

“I spent so much time focussed on my game, worrying about my income," he added. “I'm certainly more relaxed now on the course and when you are more content you do tend to play better."

Fox finished in a tie for sixth after signing for a one over par round of 74.
