European Tour — Michael Hoey’s one over 72 turned out to be the best the Irish could must in the first round of the Omega European Masters.

Struggling to retain his card at 179 in the Race to Dubai, Hoey is tied for 66th, seven behind Frenchmen Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Grégory Havret, Englishman Daniel Brooks and the USA’s Paul Peterson at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

Danny Willett’s title defence got off to a strong start as the Englishman carded a five under par opening round 65 to sit within a shot of the four-way lead.

Paul Dunne, up to 105th in the Race to Dubai following last week’s share of 10th in Denmark, made just one birdie in an afternoon 72 to share 83rd while Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke is near the back of the field after an eight over 78.

Caldwell six back

Europro Tour — Jonny Caldwell fired a four under 67 in the second round for a share of 28th in the Cobra Puma Golf Championship at Hawkstone Park.
He’s six behind a quartet of leaders with Dubliner Niall Kearney a further two shots behind on two under after a level par 71.
