Okay it wasn't at Oakmont but Simon Bryan still shot a nine-under-par 61 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Gecko Pro Tour event at Atalaya Golf & Country Club's New Course in Malaga.
Playing out Michael Campbell Golf Academy, the former Delgany player made an early bogey at the third but birdied the sixth and seventh to turn in 34, then stormed home in an otherwordly, eight-under par 27.
He birdied the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th, eagled the par-five 14th, then birdied the 15th and 17th for his 61 to lead by two strokes from Spain's Juan Carlos Osorio.
Naas' Conor O'Rourke is tied for 14th after a one-under 69 with a triple bogey at the short par-four 14th on a course that measures just 5,179 metres (5,663 yards).
