Olivia Mehaffey won her match, but Arizona State was on the verge of going out to Stanford in the semi-finals when darkness halted the NCAA Women's Golf Championship last night.

ASU beat Florida 5-0 in the quarter-finals with Mehaffey beating Samantha Wagner 5 and 4 in the top match.

But it was proving far tougher against Stanford, and while Mehaffey had a hard-fought 2 and 1 win over Andrea Lee, her side was 2-1 down with two matches still on the course when darkness fell.

Monica Vaughn, who pipped Leona Maguire and  Jennifer Kupcho to the NCAA individual title, was one down to Stanford's Albane Valenzuela standing in the 18th fairway while ASU's Linnea Strom was all square with Stanford's Madeline Chou with two to play.

In the other semi-final, USC was up in four and down in just one of their five matches against Northwestern coming down the back nine.

The weather has been a factor all week at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Illinois, and play was halted for more than two hours during the afternoon matches following torrential rain.

Play will resume at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday, with a national champion ultimately crowned in the afternoon.
