Battle for Maguire and Meadow as Feng leads US Women's Open

China's Shanshan Feng fired a six-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead in the weather-delayed US Women's Open but it was a challenge for Ireland's Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

World Amateur No 1 Leona is tied for 98th after a three over 75 with Meadow 125th after a 77.

Maguire bogeyed her first two holes, then birdied the 15th and bogeyed the 16th to turn in 38.

She then fell to four over with bogeys at the fifth and sixth but birdied the par-three seventh to gt back to three over.

Meadow failed to make a birdie in her 77, dropping five shots on a day when Feng made six birdies in a 66 to lead by one stroke from South Korea's Amy Yang (67) with Lydia Ko and So Yeon Ryu a shot further back after 68s.

Thunderstorms stopped play at 4:29 pm and players returned to the course just after 6:30 pm. in a soft drizzle before play was halted for the evening at 8:33 pm due to darkness with 39 players left to complete round one on Friday morning.
