Power blasts 64 to give himself FedEx Cup chance

Seamus Power

Seamus Power made a 10-stroke improvement on the greens and fired a seven-under par 64 to give himself an outside chance of moving into the top 125 in the FedEx Cup in the Barbasol Championship in Alabama tonight.

After taking 35 putts in a 70 on Friday, the 30-year old from West Waterford used the blade just 25 times on the greens in an immaculate third round at RTJ Trail's Grand National course to move up 34 places on the leaderboard to tied 14th on 11-under par.

He's eight strokes behind leader Scott Stalling, who shot 60 to lead by a stroke on 19-under par from Grayson Murray (64) and by two shots from Tag Ridings (63) and Chad Collins (69).

Power is currently projected to move up just five places to 137th in the FedEx Cup standings but needs to be in the top 125 at the end of the season to keep his card.

A share of third in Alabama would be enough to get him into the top 125 but he's six strokes outside that mark entering the final round and needs a huge day to make the leap this week.

The man from Tooraneena birdied the fourth, fifth and ninth to turn in 32 but made an 18 footer at the 10th, then hit a 182-yard approach to three feet to set up another birdie at the 11th to go five-under for his round.

He then got up and down from 36 yards for birdie at the par-five 13th, holing a seven footer, before getting up and down again from the edge of the lake at the 16th for another birdie four, this time knocking in a putt from 11 feet. Scores

Power is running out of time to make the top 125 before the FedEx Cup playoffs but will tee it up in next week's RBC Canadian Open and the Barracuda Championship in Reno before the final regular season event, the Wyndham Championship from August 17-20.
