Patient Power in for the weekend in Hawaii

Seamus Power

He might not have hit many fairways but Seamus Power still managed to post a second successive 68 to make the cut with ease in his first start of 2018 in the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The West Waterford man (30) hit just four fairways - one more than he did on Thursday. But he was excellent around the greens, getting up and down four times out of four from sand and twice more with chips at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

He made two bogeys all day — a three-putt from 54 feet at the third, where he putted off the green, and another at the 16th, where he was short-sided after a 190-yard approach.

But there were also four birdies in a patient round — from 41 feet for a two at the seventh; a two-putt from 20 yards at the par-five ninth; a five-footer after driving into a greenside bunker at the reachable, 342-yard par-four 10th; and a six-footer at the par-five 18th after a trademark 100-yard wedge following a bunkered tee shot.

At four-under par, Power was provisionally inside the top-30 after his 29-putt round but nine strokes behind clubhouse leader Brian Harman, who followed his opening 64 with a 63 to lead by three shots on 13-under-par from Zach Johnson (63 67), John Peterson (66 64) and Tom Hoge (65 65).
