Thornton leads the way at Warrenpoint
Tulfarris Golf Resort’s Simon Thornton carded a four-under-par 67 to win the 125th Anniversary Warrenpoint Pro-Am in aid of the Southern Area Hospice.
Thornton finished the tournament two shots ahead of Waterville Golf Links’ David Higgins with North West’s Brian McElhinney and Kilkenny’s Jimmy Bolger a shot further back on one under par.
The 41-year-old, a recent winner of the Delgany Pro-am, began his round at the par-five fourth with a birdie and proceeded to collect six more at the Co Down venue but dropped shots at the 13th, 15th and second.
“I played lovely all day really. Hit loads of fairways and greens and putted nicely,” said Simon. “I holed one from around 40 feet but the rest of the birdie putts were inside six feet.
“I had those couple of bogeys in the space of three holes but there was only one silly mistake, a three-putt on the 15th.
“Other than that it could have been lower score because the greens were really good, some of the best we've putted on all year.”
The team prize was collected by Higgins and partners with 93 points.
