McDermott and Foley tops at Portmarnock Links

Michael McDermott

Grange professional Michel McDermott made six birdies in a four-under 67 to win the best nett in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.

The former West of Ireland champion bogeyed the par-four second but then made four birdies in a row from the third and another at the ninth to turn in four-under par.

After seeing a birdie at the 12th cancelled out by a bogey at the tricky 14th, he parred his way home to win the nett by four shots from Stackstown five-handicapper Niall Kinsella and one-handicapper Dylan Keating from Seapoint, who both posted 71’s in a steady, southwesterly breeze.

Royal Dublin's Hugh Foley shot a three-under 68 to win the gross by three strokes from Portmarnock Links' scratch handicapper AJ McCabe and Corrstown professional Craig Melvin.

Out in one-under par, the plus-two handicapper came home in two-under as he mixed seven pars with birdies at the 12th and 13th.
