Mark Power third for Wake Forest in Georgia
Kilkenny’s Mark Power finished a career-best tied third for Wake Forest University in the Georgia Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Georgia on Sunday.
The two-time former Irish Boys champion followed a 68 with a 75 to lie tied for seventh heading into the final round.
But he made four birdies in his first seven holes and followed a lone bogey at the par-three 13th with a closing birdie four to card a closing, four-under 68.
A five-under tally was good enough to leave Power tied for third with Southern California’s Kaito Onishi, just two strokes behind UCLA’s Eddy Lai (72 69 68) and Texas A&M’s William Paysse (67 72 70).
Wake Forest’s Walker Cup star Alex Fitzpatrick was tied ninth on one-under.
Duke University won the team title by two strokes from Pepperdine on two-under par with Wake Forest fourth on four-over.
It was Power’s second top-10 for Wake Forest in three starts.
He tied for ninth on his debut in the Rod Myers Invitational (71-71-71=213 -3) in early September where Wake Forest won the event.
He was then joint 35th in the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational the following week (71-70-71=212 +2), where Wake Forest finished second.
Wake Forest return to action in next week’s East Lake Cup in Atlanta, which will be televised by Golf Channel.
