Keane, O'Gorman and Thompson lead Irish Intervarsity Championship tests

Team captain Ethan McGarry tees off in the National College of Ireland first participation in the Irish Intervarsity Championship at St Anne’s Golf Club on October 23.

The University of Limerick’s Jonathan Keane opened with an impressive 71 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Irish Intervarsity Championship at a testing St. Anne’s.

The Lahinch golfer made three birdies and three bogeys in a level par round on a day when the 62-strong men’s field averaged 81.24 at the Bull Island links.

Maynooth University’s Alan Hill and UCD’s Charlie Denvir are tied for second after 73’s.

In the women’s event, UCD’s Ellen O'Gorman and UCC’s Rachel Thompson lead on eight-over after hard-fought 80’s.

They lead by three strokes from Maynooth University’s Kate Dwyer and Ulster University’s Niamh Ward.

The National College of Ireland is making its debut in the event which features 75 men and women representing 15 universities and colleges, including two from overseas.

The Top-33 male players (currently 8-over or better) and the top six female players, plus ties, will advance to Friday’s third and final round.
