Carey pleased with progress despite final day disappointment
Alps Tour — David Carey shot a two-over 72 to tie for eighth in the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni in Italy.
The Dubliner was just two shots behind Italy's Edoardo Lipparelli entering the final round but while he was disappointed with his score and finished six strokes behind Spain's Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, he was happy to put in a solid week's work.
"Not quite the finish I was looking for, but nice to pick up a couple of top 8 finishes back to back," tweeted Carey, who is 42nd on the Alps Tour money list after eight starts.
Garcia drove out of bounds at the 18th but made birdie with his second ball to card a six-under 64 and win the title by two strokes on 12-under par from Lipparelli, who shot 69 at La Pinetina in Como.
"I’m very proud of the good work I’ve done to come at this point," said Garcia, who won €5,800 and tops the order of merit, almost €7,000 ahead of Lipparelli.
"I think that the Challenge Tour card for 2020 is now guaranteed. Still, I want to play the rest of the season wisely, trying to win the ranking. I’ve played very well the whole week, some stupid shots like everybody else, but all the part of my game were solid and consistent.
"I made less mistakes today compared to yesterday when I’ve made a lot of birdies, but also a lot of mistakes. It is so nice that I’ve won in Italy again! "
The tournament is dedicated to the late Italian coach Giorgio Bordoni, who died prematurely at 48, in 2013.
The next event is the Open de St. François Région Guadeloupe from June 6-8.
