Power makes a move in Reno as Watson prepares for farewell round
West Waterford's Seamus Power moved up to tied 15th with a round to go in the Barracuda Championship as he makes a late bid to save his full PGA Tour privileges for the second year running.
He kept his card by the skin of his teeth last year, ending the regular season in 125th place to make the Playoffs with nothing to spare.
This year he's facing an even tougher task having fallen to 143rd in the standings with just two events remaining. But after making six birdies and a bogey to amass 11 points in the modified stableford event yesterday, he's up to tied 15th with 26 points. Scores
He needs another 40 FedEx Cup points to make the top 125, but it is projected to move up seven places to 136th if he finishes tied 15th today.
However, he could move up to 125th with a fourth-place finish heading into next week's final regular-season event, the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Troy Merritt leads by two points from Robert Streb at Montreaux Golf and Country Club in Reno with 37 points with rookie Collin Morikawa four points behind in third.
On the Symetra Tour, Leona Maguire is tied for 32nd on three-under-par in the CDPH Open in New York after her four-under 67 in last night's second round at Capital Hills at Albany.
She's tied for 32nd, seven strokes behind Mexico's Ingrid Gutierrez and Canada's Maude-Aimee Leblanc who lead by one stroke on 10-under par from Americans Elizabeth Nagel and Robynn Ree and England's Holly Clyburn. Scores
In The Senior Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, Paul Broadhurst leads by one stroke from Woody Austin on five-under-par with Darren Clarke joint ninth, four behind, after carding a three-over 73 in the third round.
Countrymen Ken Duke and Wes Short Jr share third place on three under par, while ten-time Senior Major Champion Bernhard Langer, Australia's David McKenzie and the Welsh pair of Stephen Dodd and Phillip Price are fifth on two under. Scores
Shortly after completing his third round, five-time Champion Golfer of the Year and three-time Senior Open winner Tom Watson announced that this would be his final competitive appearance in the United Kingdom. His historic final round will commence at 09:35.
Tom Watson: "I've thought quite long and hard about the decision I've made. It has to do with really a pretty sensible assessment of how I play the game now.
"I don't have the tools in the toolbox. I've mentioned that before, that sometimes you lose the tools in the toolbox. I just don't have enough tools in the toolbox to really compete successfully.
"I'm declaring now that this is my last Senior Open Championship. I've had a good career playing professional golf all these years.
"I've run across so many fine people who have helped me and supported me. First of all, my wife, who is battling cancer now. It's going to give me some time to go out and compete with her."
Paul McGinley is tied 35th on four-over after a 72 yesterday while Des Smyth (66), who missed the cut on Friday after rounds of 75 and 73, has also likely played his final round in the Senior Open.
