Lanigan best of the Irish in Portuguese Ladies Amateur

Hermitage’s Kate Lanigan made four birdies in a one-under 71 to lead the Irish challenge after the opening round of the 90th Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Montado Hotel & Golf Resort.
She ended the day tied for 13th, five strokes behind Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Sønderby, who shot a six-under 66 to lead by a shot from world No 5 Alessia Nobilio of Italy.
Lisburn’s Paula Grant and Kirkistown Castle’s Beth Coulter are joint 23rd after one-over 73s with Clandeboye’s Jessica Ross a shot further back in 36th after a two-over 74.
Tarning Sønderby made four birdies and a bogey on the back nine to turn in 33 before picking up three more birdies on the front nine to card her 66.
Ireland are not participating the Nations Cup where Denmark leads by two strokes from Italy
