Moran and McDermott best at Portmarnock Links
Castle’s Robert Moran made three birdies in a one-under par 70 to win the gross in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.
The plus two-handicapper sandwiched a bogey at the fifth between birdies at the fourth and sixth to turn in one-under par before coming home in level as he followed a birdie at the 11th with a bogey at the 12th.
He won the gross by one stroke from professional Steve Quinlan, who turned in level by following a birdie at the second with a bogey at the fifth, then made nine pars on the back nine.
Elm Park’s Charlie Denvir played with nett winner Michael McDermott and carded a one-over 72 to take the third gross prize as 74 players teed it up in a fresh, southerly breeze.
Denvir bogeyed the fifth but birdied the next and then came home in one-over as he recovered from bogeys at the 11th, 12th and 13th with birdies at the 14th and 18th.
Grange professional McDermott won the nett with a level par 71, edging out Black Bush’s Rick Weldon after a countback.
The former Stackstown star went out in one-over but birdied the 11th and 14th before dropping a shot at the par-three 17th.
Weldon started with two bogeys but then birdied the third and eighth to turn in level before following a bogey at the 12th with a birdie on the 14th.
Portmarnock Links’ Daniel Mulligan won the third nett as he carded a one-over 72 alongside gross winner Moran.
After a bogey-bogey start, he birdied the eighth before following bogeys at the 11th and 13th with a birdie at the 14th
