Mullarney and Yates top dogs at TaylorMade Winter Series

Professionals Ronan Mullarney and Jonathan Yates took the top prizes in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Links.

Naas professional Yates won the gross by a shot from AIG Irish Close champion Hugh Foley and by two from Portmarnock’s James Temple while Galway man Mullarney also shot 68 to win the nett as 92 players teed it up in breezy, sunny conditions.

In the gross, Yates birdied the fourth and ninth, then, birdied the 10th, 11th and 12th to get to five-under before following a double bogey on the 14th and with a bogey-birdie finish for his three-under round.

Foley was out in one-under as he birdied the second, bogeyed the third and birdied the sixth  before sandwiching a bogey at the 16th between birdies at the 14th and 17th for his two-under 69.

Temple was out in one-over but he came home in two-under as he made birdies at the 10th, 13th and 17th against a solitary dropped shot at the 16th.

Mullarney went out in two-under as he birdied the first, bogeyed the fifth but then birdied the eighth and ninth. He dropped a shot at the 10th to slip back to one-under but birdied the11th and 14th to win the nett by two strokes from SQ Golf’s Steven Quinlan.

Out in one-over par, Quinlan came home in two-under par as he followed a bogey at the 11th with birdies at the 13th, 14th and 16th.

Royal Tara’s Sean Whelan had a level par 71 off two to take the third nett.

He went out in level par and came home in two-over as he mixed bogeys at the 12th, 13th and 17th with a birdie at the 14th hole.
