Purcell edges out Mehaffey and Walsh in €10,000 Shootout at The K Club
Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell fired a five-under-par 67 to capture the €2,500 top prize in the €10,000 Irish Golfer Shootout supported by BMW & Modest! Golf.
The former Walker Cup player won by one stroke from two of Ireland’s leading amateur stars — Arizona State University’s Olivia Mehaffey and Wake Forest’s Lauren Walsh, who posted four-under 68’s at the testing parkland track.
Staged to give touring professionals and leading amateurs some competitive golf as they return to the course following the COVID-19 lockdown, Irish internationals Tom McKibbin and Peter O’Keeffe shot two-under 70’s to tie for fourth with Donegal professional Brendan McCarroll.
Wake Forest and Kilkenny’s Mark Power shot 71 to tie for seventh with Dermot McElroy and Tim Rice as David Carey, Auburn University’s Julie McCarthy, Gary Hurley, John-Ross Galbraith, Richard Kilpatrick, Neil O Briain and Niall McGlynn shot level par 72’s.
Former Ryder Cup-winning skipper Paul McGinley, who will return to European Tour action at Celtic Manor next month, shot a 75 at the scene of his third Ryder Cup win in 2006.
