Caldwell and Kearney cut it in Tenerife as McKibbin shows promise but bows out

Scoring was red-hot in the Tenerife Open, where Jonathan Caldwell shot a bogey-free, three-under 68 to lead the Irish challenge on eight-under-par at Golf Costa Adeje.
He was tied for 20th, eight shots behind Germany's Nicolai Von Dellingshausen, who shot 62 to open up a three-shot lead over Pep Angles on 16-under par.
“I’m pleased with how I'm hitting it,” Caldwell said. “Certainly left a few shots out there each of the past two days but the plan for tomorrow is much of the same and hopefully I can get the putter hot and shoot a low one.”
Niall Kearney made the four-under cut on the mark after a 69, but debutant Tom McKibbin missed out by two shots after a brace of 70s with Paul Dunne and Cormac Sharvin two-over after rounds of 72 and 71.
“It wasn’t too bad,” McKibbin said after a creditable professional debut. “Obviously I’m a bit disappointed but it was pretty close. I was just off with a few things each day but I have plenty of time to work on it for next week. There were some positive things anyway. I knew a few guys from playing in a few events before and I played with James and Alfredo on the first two days and they were great guys to play with.”
McKibbin (18) will get a chance to play the course again when it hosts next week's Canary Islands Championship and while he was taken aback by the low scoring, he’s looking forward to the challenge
”I am really looking forward to it. I know how the course plays in competition so it should be good I will do a bit of work over the weekend and fire away next week,” he said.
As for the standard on the European Tour, he said: “It’s seriously great. It’s incredible really. I just saw the leaderboard coming off 18 and saw 16 under and thought he’s playing somewhere else than I am. The level is incredibly high you can’t be off at all.

The German recorded a birdie-eagle finish to reach 16-under par and match the course record at Golf Costa Adeje, but the honour of lowest round of the week so far went to Scott Jamieson of Scotland, who set a new bar with a ten under par round of 61.
Angles recorded a bogey-free seven-under-par round of 64 in the evening sun, birdieing the last to move one shot clear of the chasing pack at 13 under par.
Jamieson is then at 12 under par alongside Australian Scott Hend, Kalle Samooja of Finland and Spain’s Eduard Rousaud, with the 20-year-old former world amateur number two impressing in just his second start as a professional on the European Tour.
American Sean Crocker, Yikeun Chang of South Korea, South Africa’s Dean Burmester and Dane Thorbjørn Olesen are one shot back at 11 under par.
England’s Callum Shinkwin recorded the second hole in one of the week at the par-three second, following Dutchman Joost Luiten’s ace on the same hole on Thursday.
Nicolai von Dellingshausen:
“Just another great day in the office. I played well tee to green, had a couple of good putts but just stiffed it a lot more than I did yesterday with crucial up and downs. Just a great day, going out in the morning, close to eight, nobody in front, perhaps no wind on the front nine.
“I don’t know whether it’s the course, but I’ve been working on staying in the present a lot more and that’s one of the biggest achievements – it means it doesn’t have anything to do with the course.
“That’s what I took from the Sunday in Austria. I’m a thinker, I like being more in the future or in the past, so it’s a big challenge to stay in the present moment – I think I’ve done that a lot better the last two days.”
Pep Angles
“I’m playing good, I’m happy. I’m not being really precise, but I’m missing on the right spots and I’m able to convert the par putts and save them. It’s going to be a very competitive weekend. A lot of players, low scores, so you never know, but hopefully, I can do a decent job.
“I got to the main Tour four years ago and I realised that I was very inconsistent. Under pressure, the ball was going everywhere. If I had a good feel that week, I would play very good. If I had a bad feel, I would play horrendous. So, I changed my swing to have the club more in front, more connected to the body. It’s been 18 months now with my coach, which is starting to slowly pay off. It’s a long process, so I have to be patient.”
Scott Jamieson
“It all adds up to a great round of golf. It’s such a funny game. I just did the simple things well. Holed a couple of nice putts at the right time to get momentum on my side. The five par fives are all get-able here. If you take care of business there and you are playing well there are plenty of chances.
“It’s a nice accolade but I would prefer to have a trophy at the end of the week instead of just the course record. I’ve had a few before and have never (put the scorecard on the wall at home) but maybe I should.”,
Eduard Rousaud: “I’m very pleased, I’ve been playing really good. Last month has been difficult for me because I have just turned pro and I didn’t play as good as I would like, but I’m just trying to keep my head up. I’ve worked hard the last two or three years so I know I can be here. It’s maybe a matter of time, a matter of attitude. I’ve been working on my attitude the last three or four days. My caddie has been doing incredible work, so I’m very pleased with the first two rounds.
“Honestly, I’m not thinking about that (the prospect of winning). I just want to keep improving my attitude, keep improving my game, keep learning. These guys here, they play really, really good. I know I can be here but I’m not sure if yet, right now, but there’s no rush on that. So, I will try to enjoy it, to keep learning, to grow as a player.”
