Hearn making his mark with Bob MacIntyre's former college team
Carrick on Suir’s Jack Hearn is making his mark in US college golf and following in the footsteps of new Scottish star Robert MacIntyre.
Coached by Michael Collins — the Mallow-based PGA professional who helped James Sugrue win the Amateur Championship in 2019 — Hearn played all his junior golf at Tramore Golf Club.
The Tipperary man represented the Irish U16s before going on to play for Ireland at Boys level, making the teams for the Quadrangular Internationals, the Boys Home Internationals and European Boys Championship.
After winning the All Ireland Senior Schools with De La Salle Waterford in 2017, he went on to win the Munster Boys Order of Merit and encouraged by MacIntyre, who has Waterford connections through his former caddie Greg Milne, he signed for McNeese State University in Louisiana.
Now in his fourth year in the US, he finished a creditable sixth in the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston earlier this week in what was only his second event in just over 12 months.
Laytown and Bettystown’s Alex Maguire tied for 41st with Royal Portrush’s Jack Madden tied 53rd.
