Power chasing Burns in AT&T Byron Nelson
Seamus Power has the iron game and the putter to grab his maiden win in the $8.1 million AT&T Byron Nelson in Texas.
The West Waterford man birdied two of his last three holes, adding a four-under 68 to his opening 65 to share sixth place on 11-under par.
He’s six shots behind the in-form Sam Burns, who shot a 10-under 62 to lead by two strokes from Alex Noren on 17-under. Scores
Out in three-under, Power recovered from a bogey at his 13th, the par-three fourth, by knocking in a 40 footer for a two at the 218-yard seventh. He then hit two super shots to the par-five ninth and two-putted for a closing birdie.
“Today I probably wasn't quite as sharp as I was yesterday but overall I’m managing it pretty well and knocking in some chances when I get them,” said Power, who was tied with three-time Major winner Jordan Spieth (70), Ryder Cup star Matt Kuchar (66), Patton Kizzire (64), Carlos Ortiz (66) and former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel (68) on 11-under
“My irons have been good, so I feel like I can get after a lot of pins that some other guys can't, and then my wedges and putting have been good the last two weeks. All in all, feel like any time I tee it up here I'm going to have a pretty good chance.”
Power will play with Schwartzel in Saturday’s third round but Pádraig Harrington missed the six-under-par cut by three strokes, joining the likes of Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka and Matt Fitzpatrick in getting the weekend off ahead of next week’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course.
Harrington carded a second-round 75, missing seven greens and struggling with his scrambling. As a result, he had just five singles putts, making nothing outside five feet.
In the Betfred British Masters at The Belfry, England’s Eddie Pepperell birdied the last to snatch a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. Scores
Putting brilliantly, the 2018 champion at Walton Heath carded a four-under-par 68 to lead by a stroke from Italy's Edoardo Molinari (64) and Guido Migliozzi (67), Scots Calum Hill (70) and Robert MacIntyre (70), South Africa's Dean Burmester (65) and Poland's Adrian Meronk (65) on 10-under.
Paul Dunne ranks first in the field for putting, but the Greystones man struggled with his striking, and a one-over 73 saw him slip to 43rd on two-under.
Cormac Sharvin is one-over despite knocking in six birdies in a 73, while Jonathan Caldwell crashed to nine-over after an 80.
