Silver for Bornemann at European Seniors in France

Douglas’ Karl Bornemann stormed home in 32 as he closed with a one-under 69 — the low round of the day —  to finish second in the European Seniors Championship at Golf de Morfontaine in France.

The Cork golfer was nine strokes off the pace after opening with a 75 but he hit back in round two, carding a three-under 67 before finishing in style.

After picking up three birdies on the back nine, he finished just one stroke behind Germany’s Martin Birkholz, who followed rounds of 66 and 69 with a five-over 75 to win on level par 210. Scores

Bornemann was tied second on one-over with Tord Nilsson but claimed the silver medal with a 69 as the Swede was forced to settle for bronze follow his 70.

Ireland’s Brian McCarthy, playing out of Real Sociedad Hipica Española Club De Campo, was tied 25th on 13-over after rounds of 75, 75 and 73.

France’s Christine Petit Martin won the women’s event by four strokes on nine-over from Germany’s Alexandra Kölker and Switzerland’s Sophie Ducrey. Scores
