Winning start for Ireland in Home Internationals

International debutants Alex Maguire, Jack McDonnell, TJ Ford and Liam Nolan picked up points as Ireland opened the Men's Home Internationals with an 8.5-6.5 win over Scotland at Hankley Common in Surrey.

Ireland won the morning foursomes 3-2 with Laytown and Bettystown's Maguire and Castle's Robert Moran six-under in an incredible 8&6 win over Angus Carrick and James Wilson.

Forrest Little's McDonnell and fellow Connacht man Ford from Co Sligo came from three down through eight holes to beat Lewis Irvine and Stuart Easton by two holes. Douglas' Peter O'Keeffe and Malone's Matt McClean beat Rory Franssen and James Wilson 3&2 to give Ireland a slim lunchtime lead before John Carroll's men edged the singles session 5.5-4.5

Four of the 10 singles went to the 18th, but Ireland picked up 2.5 points as Moran made birdie to beat Irvine, Maguire beat Angus Carrick and McClean halved with George Burns in the anchor match.

West of Ireland champion Hugh Foley beat Darren Howie 7&5, Fahy beat Ruben Lindsay 2&1, while Galway talent Nolan debuted with a 5&4 win over Connor Wilson.

Ireland now face Wales, who lost 10.5-4.5 to hosts England.
