Ireland sixth in Octagonal Matches; Lanigan leads Irish in Portuguese Ladies

Ireland fell 6-3 to Italy to finish sixth in the Octagonal Matches as hosts Spain defeated England by the same scoreline to take overall victory at Costa Ballena in Cadiz.

Ireland lost the foursomes 2-1 with defeat for David Kitt and Robert Moran and halved matches for Liam Nolan and Hugh Foley, and TJ Ford and Jack McDonnell.

In the singles, Ireland failed to fire for the second day running with Foley the only man to take a full point as Nolan and Moran emerged with halves. Scores

In the title match, Spain proved too strong for England, winning the foursomes 2-1 and the singles 4-2 for a comprehensive 6-3 victory.

France beat Germany 6-3 in the battle for third and fourth.

In the 92nd Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship at Montado Golf Resort, Hermitage’s Kate Lanigan finished the best of the Irish, tied for 29th on 10-over after a final round 74.

Scores

Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh finished a shot further back in 33rd after making five birdies in an adventurous 76.

Italy’s Francesca Fiorellini closed with a level par 72 to win by three shots on nine-under from France’s Maylis Lamoure, who shot 73.
