Rested Hurley makes Mauritius move after attitude re-set
Gary Hurley credited a "good sleep" and a better attitude for his move up the leaderboard as he made seven birdies in a second-round 68 in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.
The West Waterford man (29) moved up to tied 16th on four-under-par, leaving him just six strokes behind France's Antoine Rozner, Finland's Sami Välimäki and Spain's Alfredo Garcia-Heredia after a day of high winds at Mont Choisy Le Golf.
"It's really windy," Hurley confessed after he made five birdies on the back nine to turn in 31 before sandwiching a pair of birdie fours at the fifth and seventh between three bogeys. "It was a three to four club wind at times, but I played really nicely.
"I was a lot better today with myself. It's late in the year now— it's been a long year for me — so a lot of the work I do mentally is fairly draining and yesterday, I was just getting upset about stupid things, things that haven't been really getting upset about throughout the year and it was kind of getting in the way.
"I still played quite decent. But today, I was much better in myself. I had a better theme for today about how I wanted to be, and I hit some really nice golf shots as well, so it was good."
Hurley admitted a good night's sleep helped him prepare.
Golf is hard man. Not the finish I wanted to the year but very grateful for everything that happened in 2022. Excited for some well needed rest before getting ready for the 2023 season 🎄🤌

"I woke up tired, actually, it was such a long sleep, but once I got out to the range, I felt good," he said. "It was just staying in it really. Just staying in it until the end. You never know what's going to happen.
"There are some shots that are tough — the eighth is a tough par three. But it gives you some chances as well. Some of the par fives are gettable. But you've just got to play smart as well and just be solid around the greens and on the greens. If you have a decent bit of control over your ball, you'll be there or thereabouts."
Holywood's Tom McKibbin made five birdies in a one-under 71 to share 20th on three-under, but it was a day to forget for Kinsale's John Murphy, for whom the second round was a step too far at the end of a very long season.
Playing his 36th event, Murphy was out in one over, but when he bogeyed the first and double-bogeyed the second, he was battling to make the cut and kissed goodbye to his chances of making his first cut as a rookie when he triple-bogeyed the third and eventually shot 84 after sandwiching a quadruple bogey nine at the fifth between a pair of bogeys.
Rozner joined a three-way tie for the lead going into the weekend as he seeks to claim a title that he was denied in a playoff the last time this event was played in 2019.
He signed for a sublime 64 to share the lead with Välimäki and Garcia-Heredia on 10 under par.
Välimäki, who set the course record with a 62 in the first round, was frustrated with his second-round 72, while Garcia-Heredia posted a solid 66 to join the leaders.
They are all one stroke clear of South Africa's Oliver Bekker, who carded a 71 on Friday.
Rozner was understandably delighted with his performance on a very tricky day.
"I think this is one of the first times in my career where I am happy with every single score on every hole. That doesn't happen a lot. I don't think I could score any better on this golf course today," said the man who in 2019 lost in a playoff to Rasmus Højgaard but who returns as a vastly different golfer with two DP World Tour victories since then.
"It was tricky and tough out there, so I'm really pleased with the way I played. I always missed on the right side and my chipping was great as well. It was tough, especially with the side winds. You had to aim so far right and left with those winds. My putting was also very solid. I'm happy with everything."
Mauritius certainly suits Rozner and he's relishing how the island enhances his game. "I like this place. Once you're off the course, you completely disconnect and cannot think about golf. That suits me well."
Välimäki didn't get what he was hoping for from his second round and felt his putter was to blame. "It was pretty bad really. We made four easy mistakes and couldn't make any putts. I just didn't make putts and had bad chips. I'm still playing good golf, but I just need to make those birdies," he said.
And Garcia-Heredia was thrilled to share the lead as he looks to match the big-game fishing success he's had on the island by hooking a trophy as well this week.
"I am loving the fishing in Mauritius. The fishing always relaxes me. I've caught sea trout, barracuda, a 40kg tuna, kingfish and a few others. Now I have to play some golf. But I enjoyed it a lot out there. It was fun.
"It was windy, but it was a fair wind. It was always from the same direction, so you just had to adjust for the intensity of the wind. I'm pretty much happy with everything in my game at the moment.
"I played really solid these first two rounds. I went to see a putting coach because last year wasn't good, and my putting has improved a lot. I have a good local caddie this week and he knows the greens, so I'm following his advice and it's going well."
