Yates and McCabe round off TaylorMade Winter Series with wins

Naas' Jonathan Yates closed the TaylorMade Winter Series campaign with a best of the day, four-under 67 to top the 128-strong field at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.

Set to resume battle on the Alps Tour next month, the former West of Ireland champion mixed birdie fours at the fourth and sixth a bogey four at the third before making birdies at the 10th, 11th and 13th.

With no more than a gentle north breeze to trouble the field, he won the nett by a shot from Portmarnock Links Tynam Neville and Fortwilliam's Conor McErlane with Palmerstown Stud's Joe Roche and Cork's David Hickey tied fourth with nett 69s.

Portmarnock Links' AJ McCabe, who was edged out by Caolan Rafferty at the fourth extra hole of a playoff for the Laytown and Bettystown Senior Scratch Cup on Sunday, won the gross on a countback from The Island's Joe Hanney and Castleknock's Paul Coughlan with a three-under 68.

A plus four handicapper, McCabe went out in one-under with a birdie at the fourth, then came home in two-under-par as he followed back to back birdies at the 13th and 14th with a dropped a shot at the 15th and a birdie at the 16th.

Hanney birdied the first, fourth and sixth to turn in three-under before mixing a birdie on the 16th with a bogey on the 17th for his 68 as plus 6.4 handicapper Coughlan birdied the fourth, sixth and seventh and then came home in level par as he followed a birdie at the 10th with a costly bogey at the 18th.
