Foley falls to Gough at 20th in Spanish Amateur quarter-finals
Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley fell on the 20th to England’s John Gough in the quarter-finals of the Spanish Amateur Championship for the Copa del Rey at Sherry Golf Jerez in Cádiz.
Gough went on to beat Germany’s Yannick Malik 2 and 1 in the semi-finals and will face Michael Alexander Mjaaseth of Norway, a 1 up winner over Spain’s Luis Masaveu, in Sunday’s 36-hole final.
“I had a good game with John,” Foley explained. “I had one birdie and one bogey on the front nine, missing two chances inside 10 feet and he went 2 up through nine.
“I turned it around and set myself target of the back nine I had against the Spanish player (4-under) yesterday.
”I chipped in at the 10th for birdie and birdied 11 to get level. John three-putted the 13th to give me a 1-up lead but then hit it to gimme distance on 14 for a two.
“He hit it in pond on 15 to give it straight back to me and par was enough. The 17th was the turning point.
“I hit a great drive but ended in a grass bunker on the corner of the dogleg, he’s pulled it into the trees but found a gap and got it beside the green and made birdie. I missed an eight footer for a half.
“We made pars on 18 and one and on the 20th, we both had 95 yards in. He hit first to five feet, me to 8 feet. I missed and he holed.”
In the Copa de la Reina for the Spanish Ladies Amateur at Real Club Pineda in Seville, Spain’s Cayetana Fernández will face Germany’s Charlotte Back for the title.
