Walker sets the pace with opening 67 in Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup
Roscommon’s Simon Walker opened with a five-under-par 67 to take the lead in the prestigious Trade Electric-sponsored Castletroy Senior Scratch Cup.
He made six birdies before dropping a shot at the 17th, his final hole, to lead by one stroke from Castleknock’s Paul Coughlan and Fermoy’s Dean O’Riordan in perfect conditions at the Co Limerick parkland.
Naas’ Robert Brazill and Greenore’s Michael Green shot 69s to share third place on three-under with Cork’s Morgan Cain, Irish Close champion Quentin Carew from Castleknock, Castletroy’s Dean McMahon and Kilkenny’s Richie Walsh tied sixth after 70s.
Just 14 players in the 72-strong field broke par in windless, receptive conditions and Walker was more than pleased with his opening effort.
