Power swaps La Quinta for Torrey Pines
Seamus Power has opted to swap The American Express this week for next week’s $9 million Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
The West Waterford man returned from a five-month injury layoff to finish tied 50th in The Sentry at Kapalua two weeks ago before finishing tied 74th in The Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday.
He was scheduled to join Shane Lowry in The American Express at La Quinta in California this week but withdrew on Monday.
“I’m playing San Diego next week instead,” reported Power, who has missed the cut in his four previous appearances at Torrey Pines.
While he was never in contention on his two-week trip to Hawaii, he was pleased to see positive signs from his game and overcome the physical test.
“Not bad, actually,” he said of his golf. “Nice to get some competitive golf under my belt at least.”
As for the hip injury that marred his 2023 season and scuppered his bid for a Ryder Cup cap, he added: “Not bad either, so very encouraging.”
Power fell four spots to 89th in the Official World Golf Ranking this week and needs some strong performances, especially in the Signature Events, to make the top 50 who qualify for the Masters Tournament in April.
