Nolan and McClean set for Sligo showdown in Flogas Irish Amateur Open

Galway’s Liam Nolan is looking forward to battling close friend and fellow Walker Cup star Matt McClean this weekend after they snatched the halfway lead in the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship at Co Sligo.
“It beats the library, so I’ll take it any day and hopefully a bit more of the nice weather and we’ll have a great weekend,” said Nolan, who matched Malone star McClean and carded a three-under 68 in glorious Rosses Point weather to leave them two shots clear on eight-under-par of Berehaven’s Joe O’Neill.
“It’s just nice to have someone out there playing really good as well, you can feed off. It’s not overly serious this part of the tournament I mean we are only halfway through now so a lot can happen but it’s definitely nice to be playing some good stuff heading into the weekend.”
Despite the beautiful weather, just 15 players are in the red at halfway with 132 players battling to make the top 50 and ties who will make Saturday’s 54-hole cut.
County Louth schoolboy Gavin Tiernan added a 72 to his first-round 65 to sit alone in fourth behind O’Neill, who followed his opening 67 with a 69 to set the pace at six under before being overhauled by Nolan and McClean in the afternoon.

Co Sligo’s TJ Ford remains in contention on three-under after a 71, tied for fifth with Welshman Tom Matthews while recently crowned West of Ireland champion Keith Egan from Carton House lies just six shots off the lead.
Nolan birdied the first, eagled the third and birdied the sixth as he turned in 32 en route to his 68, McClean came home in 32 to match him with a dropped shot at the 15th erased by birdies at the 10th, 11th, 16th and 18th,
“We’ve been playing golf for the last three years in the Ireland team and obviously played a lot together, so we enjoy each other’s company out there,” said McClean.
“He’s playing very well, he got off to a really hot start today, so I was just trying to keep up with him really on the way around there and luckily made a few putts on the way in.
“Tied going into tomorrow, but still 36 holes to go, and there’s obviously plenty of other guys in the field, so just be trying to do more of the same and stay aggressive with the approach shots and putts, and we’ll see where we are after tomorrow evening.”
