Entries for Dun Laoghaire Senior Scratch Cup close on Friday

Some of Ireland’s top amateurs will have a chance to familiarise themselves with Dun Laoghaire for the August’s Irish Men’s Amateur Close and when it hosts its annual Senior Scratch Cup for men and women on Sunday, 14 July.

The 36-hole shotgun start event has a prize fund of €3,000 and entries close on Friday 5th July via the club website.

The event is staged in memory of Peter Cosgrave, whose family firm built the course and clubhouse.

Lady Captain Mary Cryan said: “We hope the players enjoy our course which was designed and constructed by Martin Hawtree in 2002.  It’s a great test for men and women alike.”

Dun Laoghaire is aiming for an equal number of male and female entrants in this, its second Senior Scratch cup.

The inaugural winners were Robert Moran (Castle GC) and Anna Abom (Woodbrook GC).

The entry list this year alreadyincludes a number of current international and inter-provincial players.

The event is a great opportunity to play the course before it hosts the Irish Close in August.

Men’s Captain Tom Byrne noted: “The fescue is up, the fairways are running and the greens are smooth and fast.  The course is a great test as we prepare for the Irish Close in August.”

The field is limited to the top 72 players by handicap and the entry fee includes lunch and also finger food at the presentation which takes place immediately following the conclusion of play.

Dun Laoghaire moved to its present location in 2007 and was the first new course in Ireland designed by the renowned Martin Hawtree.

It has already hosted the Irish Youths, European Senior Ladies teams, the Curtis Cup and last year hosted the AIG Senior Cups and the Barton Shield and Senior Foursomes finals.
