Play in Pink raised incredible €779,000 towards breast cancer research in 2024

Play in Pink, the golf event fundraising arm of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) at the Lambe Institute in Galway enjoyed another fantastic year in 2024.

“With 220 clubs signing up to take part and almost €779,000 raised for the charity this was the biggest year we’ve ever had,” said Dr. Miriam Hand, National Co-Ordinator.

“This is an unbelievable achievement, and I’m so delighted to see such fantastic support from golf clubs, Captains, our corporate and media partners and also our event partners at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open and the Irish Challenge. We were also recently awarded Official Charity status with Golf Ireland and I’m sure that will help us immensely for 2025 and beyond.

“The charity couldn’t perform its work to the same level without these amazing donations and seeing Play in Pink grow from year to year is so rewarding for all those who played their part.”

For the uninitiated, Play in Pink days are golf days run by clubs or societies where the participants quite literally Play in Pink to support the NBCRI. Monies raised go directly to research to help drive real and measurable improvement in clinical outcomes for breast cancer patients.

Currently, 1 in 7 Irish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before 75 years of age and there are 3,507 cases diagnosed annually which is set to continue to increase. These women are our mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, friends and neighbours. We know these women; they play major roles in our lives.

“There are so many people to thank for this record-breaking fundraising year. We’ve been running for 20 years now but I never dreamed we would reach these levels,” Hand added.

“Our volunteer support network are the key to keeping the momentum going and I can’t thank them enough for all they do but to anyone and everyone who was involved in any way in 2024, thank you so very much.”
