Clynch leads Irish Seniors Amateur
Jimmy Clynch continued in sparkling form on the second day of the Irish Seniors Amateur Open Championship at Westport Golf Club.
The Laytown & Bettystown man added a two under par round of 71 to his opening 70 for a total of 141 and four- shot lead going into Friday's third and final round.
It promises to be exciting with former internationals, and newcomers to the Seniors ranks, Adrian Morrow (Portmarnock) and Liam McNamara (Woodbrook) sharing second place on one under par 145 along with Bandon's John Carroll, while reigning British Seniors champion and former Irish international and Walker Cup player, Arthur Pierse (Tipperary) is very much in contention on 147.
Nigel Duke (Killiney), Chris Hurst (Castlebar) and Glynn Rees (Wales) all returned 75s and are next on 148, while twice former winner, John Baldwin (USA), who opened with a one under par 72, slipped to a four over par second round of 77 for 149, one shot ahead of Co. Louth's Barry Reddan who returned a one over par 74 for 150.
On the front nine Clynch had birdies at the third, fourth and fifth holes, but dropped shots at the first and ninth holes to turn in one under par 36, while on the back nine he had eight pars and one birdie a two at the 12th for a one under and a round of two under par 71.
After an opening round of one under par, Morrow added a level par second round 73. He made a birdie two at the second, and birdie threes at the eighth 13th and 17th holes, but took a double bogey six at the fifth, and bogeys at the par five 10th and par four 11th.
McNamara's level par round of 73 included three birdies and three bogeys. He started birdie, bogey, birdie (3, 5, 2), took a bogey six at the seventh and made birdie three at the ninth to turn in one under par 35. On the back nine he scored a birdie four at the tenth, but took a bogey five at the 11th and six at the 18th.
Carroll produced a fine two under par second round 71. He was out in level par 36 - with birdies at the first and fourth, but dropped shots at the sixth and ninth and came home in two under par 35 with birdies at the 16th and 17th holes.
